Mayo Contemporary presents NAUTICA, a solo exhibition by Brian McCarthy.
Brian McCarthy (b. 1960) is one of the few living Irish artists to have had his paintings hung in the National Gallery of Ireland and go under the hammer at Christie’s in London.
Working exclusively in oils, vibrant colours and realism are central to his craft. Brian’s career began in 1981 when a self-portrait was included in the Douglas Hyde Gallery’s Living Art Exhibition. Since then, he’s had two solo shows, Boomtown and Masquerade, both of which garnered extensive critical acclaim. Most recently, Brian was shortlisted for the 2019 Zurich Portrait Prize for his portrait of RTÉ broadcaster Joe Duffy. This same portrait was subsequently exhibited in the Crawford Art Gallery in Cork.
